Morganite vs Diamonds

What’s the difference between morganite and diamonds?

Have you heard about morganite? It’s becoming a more and more popular stone for engagement rings, but we wondered what the difference is between morganite and diamonds. We’ve done our homework and are ready to explain the differences between them!

First let’s talk about how we got onto this topic. If you’ve been following us on Instagram, you may remember Candace’s sister got engaged in December 2018 and sent Candace a picture of her gorgeous pink hued ring, which was morganite. And that got us wondering, what is the difference? So here is your crash course on morganite and how if differs from diamonds!

What is Morganite?

Also called rose beryl, morganite is a pink colored variety of the beryl gem family. It is most popular because of its pink hue. Morganite gets its pink hue from the presence of the mineral manganese. Other types of beryl are emerald and aquamarine. It is a very rare gemstone, which may surprise you because of how affordable it is. It also comes in different cuts just like diamonds.

Morganite vs Diamond

The most obvious difference is color. Morganite can have any hue ranging from pink to peach to sometimes a pink-violet, where as diamonds can be range from colorless to yellow, depending on how much you want to pay. Morganite pairs perfectly with rose gold and since diamonds are near colorless, they go with just about anything!

The second obvious difference is price. Morganite is way, way more affordable than diamonds, whereas diamonds will cost you an arm and a leg, and probably your first born child (you were thinking it, I just said it).

Another difference is durability. Diamonds are the most durable with a rating of 10 on the Moh hardness scale. This means that a diamond can with stand scratches and chips. Morganite has a rating of 7.5 to 8 on the Moh hardness scale, meaning it is quite durable, but there still is a risk for scratching and chipping.

Our Thoughts

It comes down to what you prefer. Morganite is has a more feminine feel to it with its pink hues. Where as diamonds are elegant and timeless. Whatever stone you pick, or demand your significant other to get you, we know it will look fabulous on your finger!
